Bristol's best first-date territory is around the harbour. King Street, Welsh Back and the waterside down to Wapping Wharf are busy, mostly flat and a short walk from the city centre bus stops and Temple Meads.
It's a city where people dress down and drink well, so nobody expects a fancy cocktail bar. A good pub or a busy harbourside bar does the job nicely.
Bristol's taxis are easy to tell apart, which helps at the end of the night. Hackney carriages are painted Bristol Blue. Private hire cars come in any colour except that one, and must be booked.
Where to go in Bristol
King Street and Welsh Back
A cobbled street of old pubs by the water, with a cider boat moored on Welsh Back. Busy most evenings.
Harbourside
Watershed and the arts venues along the water, well lit and close to the Centre bus stops.
Wapping Wharf
Small independent bars and restaurants by the harbour. A good daytime or early-evening option.
Places for a first drink
Busy enough to feel relaxed, quiet enough to talk, and easy to leave. Check opening times on their own sites before you go.
- 01
Small Bar
beer bar · King Street
Pouring beer since 2013, with 31 taps and proper bar food. A reliable, sociable choice in the middle of King Street.
- 02
The Old Duke
jazz and blues pub · King Street
A long-standing jazz and blues pub. Good if you'd like music to fill the gaps, though you'll want a table away from the band if you're hoping to talk.
- 03
The Apple
cider boat · Welsh Back
A cider bar on a boat moored on Welsh Back. Unusual enough to give you something to talk about, and right in the middle of things.
- 04
Watershed
cinema bar · Harbourside
The bar at the harbourside cinema on Canons Road. Relaxed and easy to find, and a film is a natural next step if things go well.
- 05
Wapping Wharf
independent bars and restaurants · Harbourside
A small harbourside neighbourhood of independent bars and places to eat. Meet there and pick somewhere together.

Getting home
First Bus runs a night network from the city centre to places including Cribbs Causeway, Henbury, Hengrove, Emersons Green, Cadbury Heath and UWE Frenchay. On Fridays and Saturdays the X14 also runs out to Portishead, Clevedon and Weston-super-Mare. A couple of routes run in term time only, so check yours.
Temple Meads is a short walk from King Street. Look up your last train on National Rail before the evening starts.
Hackney carriages, the blue ones with white and red plates and a roof sign, can be flagged down or taken from a rank. Private hire cars, with yellow and red plates, can only be booked through a licensed operator before the journey starts. It's illegal for them to take you if you hail them. Agree the fare when you book.
Staying safe in Bristol
- Check the driver's badge: the council says the photo should match the driver and the expiry date should be current. The plates inside and outside the car should be in date too.
- When you book private hire, ask for the car's make, registration and the driver's name, then check them when it arrives.
- Take a photo of the plate or registration before you get in and send it to a friend. That comes straight from the council's advice.
- If you have any doubts about a car, don't get in. Problems with a licensed taxi can be reported to Bristol City Council online.
- The harbour is dark in places late at night. Stick to the lit routes along the water rather than shortcuts across the quays.

First dates in Bristol: questions
How do I spot a licensed taxi in Bristol?
Hackney carriages are painted Bristol Blue, with white and red plates and an illuminated roof sign. Private hire cars come in other colours and show yellow and red plates. Both carry plates front and back.
Are there night buses in Bristol?
Yes. First Bus runs a night network from the city centre, plus the X14 to Portishead, Clevedon and Weston-super-Mare on Friday and Saturday nights. Some routes run in term time only.
Is King Street good for a first date?
Yes. It's short, busy and by the water, with several good pubs side by side if you want to move on, and it's close to the city centre.
